July 8 Mtg: Martin Roy Hill on Violence for Writers

July 8, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Martin Roy Hill to speak at
San Diego Chapter of Sisters in Crime July 8 at Mysterious Galaxy
Partners in Crime, the San Diego chapter of the national organization Sisters in Crime,
welcomes local author and chapter member Martin Roy Hill as our speaker on Saturday, July 8
at Mysterious Galaxy.
His subject will be Violence 101: A Primer for Writers, which will focus on the impact
of violent injuries on victims
Martin Roy Hill is the author of the Peter Brandt mysteries, the military mystery thriller, The Killing Depths, the sci-fi novella, Eden, and the award-winning short story collection, DutyThe Butcher’s Bill, his sequel to the highly popular The Killing Depths, was released in June  2017.

Hill has special expertise in his subject. He has been a medic in three branches of the military. Most recently, as a medical service corps officer in a component of the California National Guard, he helped train combat medics for Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also served as both a wilderness search-and-rescue (SAR) medic and a tactical medic as a reserve sergeant in his local sheriff’s department, and as an EMT on a federal Disaster Medical Assistance Team. In his “day job” he is a U.S. Navy analyst in combat casualty care.

July’s reader will be chapter member Marcia Buompensiero, who writes the Theo
Hunter mystery series under the name Loren Zahn. She will read from her new novel
Summerland, which won first place in the mystery category in the 2017 San Diego Book Awards.

A career in public education administration taught Buompensiero about stamina and overcoming disappointment—a natural platform from which to launch a writing career. Armed with more writing class credits and life experiences than money, she jumped feet first into writing the Theo Hunter Mysteries. Penned under the pseudonym “Loren Zahn” the mystery/suspense/romance series follows the escapades of a disgraced investigative reporter who just can’t say “no” to solving some of San Diego’s mysteries and crimes—even when her life is on the line. The series debuted with Dirty Little Murders (2009, republished in 2016) and followed with Deadly Little Secrets (2015) which was a mystery category finalist in the 2015 San Diego Book Awards.

In a departure from the Theo Hunter Mystery series, Buompensiero’s paranormal romance/mystery, Summerland, debuted in late 2016. Based on the dark secrets and unanswered questions from her own family’s past, Buompensiero wove a mystery, peopled with ghosts, overshadowed by haunting family secrets, and tinged with her own unsettling brushes with the paranormal while living in a local mansion.

Summerland was awarded First Place-Mystery Category, for 2017 by the San Diego Book Awards Association.

Both will have books available for purchase.
